Tintinnabuli

September 7, 2025 @ 13:00 - 14:00

The theme of this year’s Tokyo University of the Arts Festival is tamayura — the fleeting resonance that arises when two magatama beads touch, shimmering like the delicate chime of a tiny bell. Estonian composer Arvo Pärt (one of today’s most performed living composers) created a musical language he called “tintinnabuli” (Latin for “bell”) in the 1970s. His music is said to cleanse the soul, dissolve the boundaries of time and space, and draw hearts together in spiritual clarity.

“Tintinnabuli’s” program gathers works by Pärt, Uusberg, and Sumera — three Estonian composers who treasure the transience of sound, and the mysterious union of tone and silence. Together, their music shapes what might be called the tamayura of Estonian classical music: fragile, luminous, and fleeting.

For forty minutes, may you surrender to music that swells and recedes like the tides of life. May it offer a quiet shelter from the day, a moment for stillness and reflection, and a chance to rediscover the beauty of small sounds born from silence.
